A CVV dump is a batch of stolen payment card records that typically includes the card number, expiration date, cardholder name, and the card verification value (CVV). The word "dump" comes from carding communities and refers to a copied set of card data pulled from a magnetic stripe or a breached database. In the United States, obtaining, selling, or using a CVV dump is credit card fraud and a federal crime.

So the direct answer to "what is a CVV dump" is simple: it is stolen financial data packaged for illegal resale. It is not a legitimate financial product, and there is no lawful market for it.

What a CVV dump usually contains

Contents vary by source, but most dumps are built from the same core fields that a payment terminal or online checkout would read.

A record may also list the card's country of issue or the bank that issued it. These details help a criminal guess whether a stolen card is likely to trigger a fraud alert.

CVV dump vs fullz vs CVV-only

Carding slang draws distinctions between data sets, and the labels matter when you read fraud reporting or threat intelligence summaries.

Fullz carry more risk to the victim because they can support new account fraud, not just a single unauthorized charge.

How the data ends up in a dump

Stolen card data rarely comes from one clever trick. It comes from ordinary gaps in security that get exploited at scale.

Once a batch is compiled, it gets traded on hidden forums or messaging channels, which is why the same card number can appear in several dumps over time.

Why CVV dumps are illegal

Possessing, transferring, or using stolen card credentials falls under federal wire fraud, access device fraud, and identity theft statutes in the US, and comparable laws in most other countries. Penalties can include prison time, fines, and restitution to victims and banks.

There is also a practical trap. Any marketplace that advertises stolen card data is either run by criminals, monitored by law enforcement, or both. Buyers who send payment to such a site have no recourse and often become victims of the same people selling the data.

How to protect your own cards

Card data theft is preventable in many cases with a few consistent habits.

What to do if your card data is exposed

Act quickly. Report the card as lost or compromised to your issuer, dispute any unauthorized charges in writing, and change passwords on shopping and banking accounts. If personal identifiers leaked alongside the card, file a report with the Federal Trade Commission and place a fraud alert or freeze with the major credit bureaus.

Understanding what a CVV dump is matters because the term shows up in news coverage, security reports, and scam pitches. Recognizing the phrase for what it describes, stolen card data packaged for crime, makes it easier to spot the schemes built around it and to shut them down before they cost you money.
