Short answer

Selling stolen card data, called dumps or CVV, for bitcoin is a federal crime in the United States. This page does not list rates, marketplaces, escrow steps, or buyer contacts. It covers the law and the penalties that follow a conviction.

What the law covers

18 U.S.C. 1029 governs fraud and related activity connected to access devices. An access device is any card, account number, or code used to obtain money, goods, or services. The statute reaches people who produce, sell, transfer, or possess counterfeit access devices and device-making equipment.

Bitcoin does not conceal the payment

Blockchain ledgers are public and permanent. Every transfer is recorded. Exchanges hold customer records under KYC rules and answer subpoenas. Investigators use chain analysis to link wallets, and prosecutors have entered those records as evidence. A wallet address stops being anonymous once it touches a regulated exchange.

Enforcement agencies

The FBI, the U.S. Secret Service, and the Department of Justice Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section handle these cases. The cases cross borders. Europol and national police units coordinate with U.S. agencies on carding rings.

Penalties that stack

A carding prosecution does not end with one count. Aggravated identity theft under 18 U.S.C. 1028A adds a mandatory 2-year term that runs after the underlying sentence. Wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy charges can follow. Restitution orders cover losses to banks and cardholders.

If your card data was exposed

  1. Contact the card issuer and close the account.
  2. File a report with the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov.
  3. File a complaint with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center.
  4. Place a freeze or fraud alert with the three credit bureaus.
