CVV Test Mode: What It Means and How to Test Card Flows Safely
CVV test mode lets you run card checkout tests with fake card numbers and fake CVV values in a payment sandbox. Here is how it works and where it stops.
Redeem your gift cards at any of our Merchants
Onyx Gift Cards is a Grenadian company designed to introduce, market and manage gift cards systems in Grenada for retailers and corporations. We are enthusiastic about the effect and influence we will have on the local market. We intend to expand our systems regionally with a range of product offerings and services.
Gift cards are the preferred way of giving and receiving gifts. They carry a monetary value that can be redeemed for gifts at your favorite store.
Onyx GiftCards are “Open Gift Cards” which means that they can be redeemed at multiple merchant locations. They are standard credit card size, can fit into the average wallet and made of PVC plastic. Onyx GiftCards are Barcoded for security and safety for the consumer and bear a disclaimer at the back.
Onyx Giftcards can be bought with a branded Card backer which is black in colour and is designed to fit the card. There is an area to write a brief message to the recipient as well.
A fake CVV is a placeholder you type into a sandbox checkout form. It is not a real card code and it links to no account. Payment processors publish test card numbers, and their test mode accepts a fixed or arbitrary CVV for those numbers. Nothing is charged and no bank is contacted.
Visa calls it the Card Verification Value. It is the 3-digit code printed on the back of the card, next to the signature panel. American Express prints a 4-digit code on the front. The issuer generates the code and ties it to the account number. It is not stored on the magnetic stripe.
The test card number and the test CVV belong to the same sandbox. Stripe documents 4242 4242 4242 4242 with any future expiry date and any 3-digit CVC. PayPal generates sandbox cards inside its developer dashboard. Adyen, Braintree and Authorize.net publish similar tables.
Most gateways accept 123, 999, or any three digits on a test card. Amex test cards take a 4-digit CID. Some gateways let you trigger a specific decline by entering a CVV from their test table, such as a mismatch code. Check the processor docs for the exact rule. Values differ between providers.
It does not work on a live storefront. It does not pass 3-D Secure. It does not authorize a charge on a real card. The number is bound to the test card number and to the sandbox account that issued it.
Test card data is for systems you own or are authorized to test. Using a card number, CVV, or expiry that belongs to another person is card fraud in the US under 18 U.S.C. § 1029. PCI rules also bar storing the CVV after authorization.
