You cannot buy a CVV from any legal seller. A CVV (card verification value) is the three or four digit code printed on a payment card, and it exists to prove the person paying holds the physical card. Every site that sells CVVs is trafficking in stolen financial data, which is a federal crime in the United States.

What a CVV Is and Why Banks Add It

A CVV is the three digit code on the back of most Visa, Mastercard and Discover cards, and the four digit code on the front of American Express cards. Banks derive it from the card number, the expiration date and a secret key, so the code never appears in the magnetic stripe or the chip. Online merchants ask for it as proof that the buyer holds the physical card.

CVV vs. card number

A card number moves through payment networks, gets stored by merchants, and shows up in breach dumps. The CVV does not travel with it. That gap is why a stolen card number has little use on its own, and why criminals hunt for CVVs instead.

Why Every "Buy CVV" Listing Is a Scam, a Crime, or Both

There is no licensed CVV vendor, no wholesale supplier, and no seller with a reputation to protect. Listings sit on Telegram channels, dark web forums and throwaway storefronts, and payment runs through cryptocurrency. Buyers hand over money, identity details and wallet addresses to strangers who face no consequences for cheating them.

The legal exposure

Federal law at 18 U.S.C. § 1029 treats card numbers and CVVs as unauthorized access devices. Trafficking in them, or possessing 15 or more with intent to defraud, carries a statutory maximum of 10 years in prison for a first offense and 15 years for a repeat offense. State prosecutors add their own fraud and identity theft charges on top of that.

What Legitimate Options Do You Have?

If the real goal is paying for something online without exposing your main card, there are legal routes that cost nothing extra.

Virtual card numbers

Many banks and card issuers let account holders generate a one-time or merchant-locked card number inside their app. The number comes from your own account, so there is nothing to buy and no stolen data involved.

Prepaid and gift cards

Retail stores sell prepaid cards and network gift cards at face value. These carry their own CVV and work for online checkout where the merchant accepts them.

Credit builder and secured cards

If you have no card at all, a secured card with a cash deposit gives you a legitimate number, a CVV and a path to building credit. Approval takes days, not minutes, but the account is yours.

How to Protect Your Own CVV

Most card data ends up for sale because of a breach, a skimmer or a phishing page, not because someone guessed the code.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is buying a CVV illegal in the US?

Yes. Buying, selling or possessing card verification values tied to accounts you do not own falls under 18 U.S.C. § 1029 and comparable state laws. Intent to defraud is the element prosecutors need, and a purchase record supplies it.

Can I buy a CVV from a bank?

No. Banks issue cards and CVVs only to the account holder, and the code is tied to that account. If your card is lost or damaged, the issuer mails a replacement with a new CVV at no cost.

What is a "CVV shop"?

A CVV shop is a storefront that sells stolen card data in bulk. The inventory comes from breaches, skimmers and phishing kits, and the operator keeps no records that would help a buyer who gets cheated.

My card data showed up for sale. What now?

Call your issuer, freeze the card and request a new number with a new CVV. Then file a report with the FTC at IdentityTheft.gov and a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center so the incident is on record.

Bottom Line

There is no legitimate marketplace for CVVs, so the question of where to buy one has only bad answers. Legal card options exist for anyone who needs to pay online, and they come with fraud protection that stolen data never will.
