What is a Gift Card?

Gift cards are the preferred way of giving and receiving gifts. They carry a monetary value that can be redeemed for gifts at your favorite store.
Onyx GiftCards are “Open Gift Cards” which means that they can be redeemed at multiple merchant locations. They are standard credit card size, can fit into the average wallet and made of PVC plastic. Onyx GiftCards are Barcoded for security and safety for the consumer and bear a disclaimer at the back.
Onyx Giftcards can be bought with a branded Card backer which is black in colour and is designed to fit the card. There is an area to write a brief message to the recipient as well.

A test credit card expiry date is any future date written in MM/YY form that a payment gateway accepts in sandbox mode. Test numbers such as 4242 4242 4242 4242 have no real expiration date, so a value like 12/34 works as long as it is later than today and uses a two digit month. The date is synthetic test data, not a real cardholder's expiry.

What format should a test card expiry date use?

Use two digits for the month, a slash, then two digits for the year: 01/30, 09/32, 12/34. Leading zeros are required from January through September, so 04/31 passes and 4/31 fails most validators.

Some APIs split month and year into separate fields, and a few legacy gateways still accept a four digit year. Confirm the field spec in your provider's test documentation before you hard code a value.

Which expiry date should you pick for testing?

Pick a date far enough ahead that your fixtures never expire, commonly 12/34, 12/40, or 01/45, and store it once in a shared fixture file. Every test run then sends the same value, which keeps failures reproducible.

Avoid dates more than roughly 15 to 20 years out. Some risk engines and validation libraries treat unrealistic expiry windows as suspicious and will decline for reasons unrelated to your code.

Why does a test card fail with a valid future expiry date?

Most expiry related failures in sandbox mode come from four causes: a four digit year in a two digit field, a missing leading zero, a fixture that has quietly aged into the past, or test mode being switched off while live keys are loaded.

Does the CVV or expiry date affect test declines?

Standard success test numbers accept any three or four digit CVV and any future expiry. Many providers also publish dedicated trigger values where a specific expiry or CVV forces a decline code such as expired card or incorrect CVV, and those triggers only fire in test mode.

Read the trigger table carefully before you use one. A single trigger card reused across your suite can mask real bugs in your checkout flow.

How do you validate an expiry date before sending it?

  1. Parse the month and confirm it falls between 1 and 12.
  2. Confirm the year is two or four digits as your field expects, then normalize it.
  3. Reject any date earlier than the current month, using UTC to avoid timezone drift.
  4. Run a Luhn check on the card number itself, since expiry validation never covers the number.

Can you use real card expiry dates for testing?

No. Test environments should only contain synthetic numbers issued by your payment provider, because storing live card data outside production violates PCI DSS. Generated numbers that pass Luhn with a made up CVV and a future expiry are fine for format testing, but they will never authorize against a real processor.
