Onyx Giftcards can be bought with a branded Card backer which is black in colour and is designed to fit the card. There is an area to write a brief message to the recipient as well.

A test card for refund is a sandbox card number that a payment processor publishes for testing. A charge made with a test card can be refunded, and the processor returns a refund event. No money moves. Test card numbers fail in live mode.

What a test card is

Stripe publishes 4242 4242 4242 4242 as a test card that accepts all charges. The expiry can be any future date, the CVC any 3 digits, and the ZIP any 5 digits. Braintree, Adyen, and Authorize.Net publish their own test numbers. Each processor keeps a list of decline cards, such as 4000 0000 0000 0002, for failed refund and failed charge tests.

Refund timing: test mode vs live mode

How to test a refund flow

  1. Create a charge with a test card in test mode.
  2. Send a full refund through the API or the dashboard.
  3. Send a partial refund, then send a second refund that pushes the total above the charge amount. Read the error code.
  4. Refund a charge that was never captured. Read the error code.
  5. Read the webhook events: charge.refunded, refund.created, refund.updated.
  6. Refund a declined test charge and confirm the API returns a 402 or an equivalent error.

Fees

Fee rules differ by processor. In most cases the processor keeps the original processing fee on a refunded charge and adds a per refund fee. Stripe charges no fee in test mode. Read the fee schedule before testing partial refunds, because the net refund amount depends on the rule.

Common mistakes

Legal note

Test card numbers come from processor documentation and hold no value outside a sandbox. Buying, selling, or using a real card number without authorization violates 18 U.S.C. § 1029 in the US. Penalties include fines and up to 10 years in prison for a first offense. A test card cannot move real money, and a real card number is not a test card.
