Joker: Folie à Deux (2024) picks up with Arthur Fleck locked in Arkham State Hospital and waiting to stand trial for the five killings from the first film. The story plays as a courtroom drama inside a musical: Arthur meets fellow patient Lee Quinzel, falls for her, and the pair slide into song-and-dance numbers staged in his head. Arthur is found not guilty by reason of insanity, then stabbed to death by a fellow inmate while Lee walks away.
The film opens with a recap of Arthur's crimes told through an animated sequence, then settles into Arkham. Arthur is medicated, watched, and treated as a celebrity by guards and inmates alike. A guard named Jackie Sullivan uses him for laughs. Lee Quinzel arrives in the music therapy group, sings along with him, and makes the first move.
The songs are not stage performances inside the story. They are Arthur's interior fantasies, built from standards like "Get Happy" and "That's Entertainment." Each number marks a moment where Arthur rewrites his life into something grander than the hallway he is standing in. When Lee joins a number, it signals that she is playing along with his version of events.
Arthur is acquitted on the murder charges by reason of insanity and returned to Arkham rather than freed. In the hallway, an inmate approaches him and stabs him. The scene closes on Arthur bleeding out with a smile, then cuts to the inmate carving a Glasgow smile on his own face. Lee, seen in the visiting room earlier, is gone.
The film runs 138 minutes and carries an R rating in the US for violence, language, and some sexual content.
