What a "CVV shop" really is

A storefront that advertises card numbers paired with CVV codes, cardholder names, and billing ZIP codes is not a legitimate merchant. It is a marketplace for stolen access devices and for data taken in breaches, skimming operations, and phishing campaigns. Buying that data is a federal offense in the United States under 18 U.S.C. 1029, and prosecutions frequently add wire fraud, identity theft, and money laundering counts on top. There is no warranty, no dispute process, and no fraud department to call, because the purchase itself is the crime. This page does not provide a buying guide. It explains how card data is captured and what to do instead.

How CVV and card data gets captured

Steps to protect your card and CVV

  1. Turn on real-time transaction alerts in your card issuer's app and set a low dollar threshold.
  2. Request a virtual card number for online subscriptions and one-off purchases.
  3. Inspect the reader and keypad before you swipe, insert, or tap, and pull on the housing to check for a loose overlay.
  4. Never send the CVV by text, email, or chat, and never read it aloud on a call you did not initiate.
  5. Cover the keypad when entering a PIN, and use a contactless tap where it is available.
  6. Review posted charges at least once a week rather than waiting for the statement.
  7. Freeze your credit file at all three bureaus so new accounts cannot be opened in your name.

If your numbers show up on a charge you did not make

  1. Call the number on the back of your card and ask the issuer to close the account and issue a new number.
  2. Submit the dispute in writing so you have a dated record, and keep the confirmation.
  3. File a report at IdentityTheft.gov and a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center.
  4. File a police report if the issuer or a merchant asks for one, and keep the case number.

Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, you can dispute unauthorized charges and your liability for a stolen card number is capped at 50 dollars when you report promptly. That protection does not extend to someone who buys stolen card data from a shop, which is why the buyers, not just the sellers, end up in court.

Pitfalls that catch people on the buying side

Every transaction with a card-data seller hands your own payment details, IP address, and contact information to criminals. The most common outcome is not a working card number but a drained wallet, a card of your own used without permission, or an extortion attempt against you. Sellers also routinely resell the same data to many buyers, so any card you receive has usually already been reported and shut down.

If your goal is to accept card payments online, work with a licensed payment processor and use their tokenization and 3-D Secure tools. If your goal is to test your own fraud controls, use a sandbox account from a processor, not live card data.
