Gift cards are the preferred way of giving and receiving gifts. They carry a monetary value that can be redeemed for gifts at your favorite store.
Onyx GiftCards are “Open Gift Cards” which means that they can be redeemed at multiple merchant locations. They are standard credit card size, can fit into the average wallet and made of PVC plastic. Onyx GiftCards are Barcoded for security and safety for the consumer and bear a disclaimer at the back.
Onyx Giftcards can be bought with a branded Card backer which is black in colour and is designed to fit the card. There is an area to write a brief message to the recipient as well.
A CVV is the 3-digit code on the back of most US cards, or 4 digits on the front of American Express cards. It exists to prove the card is in hand for card-not-present transactions. Issuers do not store the code in the magnetic stripe or on the chip.
Buying, selling, or holding card data that belongs to another person is a federal crime. 18 U.S.C. 1029 covers access device fraud. A conviction carries a maximum of 10 years in prison. If the case involves more than one access device, or value of $1,000 or more in a one-year period, the maximum is 15 years. 18 U.S.C. 1028 adds identity theft counts with a 15-year maximum.
Intent decides the charge, not the number of cards. Prosecutors must show intent to defraud. One card number is enough. A buyer does not need to use the card or receive goods.
Marketplace operators take payment and deliver nothing. Sites shut down and return no funds. A buyer who sends crypto to a scam seller has no recourse. Reporting the loss to police means reporting a crime the buyer took part in.
Numbers that are sold can be canceled before use, already at the credit limit, or tied to accounts with fraud alerts. Stolen data is resold to many buyers. No public data gives a reliable count of valid cards sold, so any claim of a clean or verified batch comes from the seller.
Use your own card. Add an authorized user through your bank. For business spending, request a corporate card from the issuer. Merchants ask the customer for the number at the point of sale.
If your own card data was exposed, contact the issuer, place a freeze with the three credit bureaus, and file a report at IdentityTheft.gov.
