What is credit card testing?

Credit card testing is a fraud technique where criminals use stolen card numbers to make small purchases or authorization requests. The goal is to see which cards are still active and valid. Once a card passes the test, it is used for larger fraudulent transactions or sold on dark web markets.

How does credit card testing work?

Fraudsters typically use automated scripts or bots to submit many card numbers to a merchant's payment page. They look for responses like approved, declined, or CVV mismatch. Even a small successful transaction confirms the card is live. This process can happen quickly across multiple merchants to avoid detection.

Some tests use low-value items, like a $1 donation, because those transactions often bypass stricter fraud checks. Others may use card verification services that charge a nominal fee. The common thread is validating the card without raising suspicion.

Why is credit card testing a problem for merchants?

Card testing leads to chargebacks, lost merchandise, and higher processing fees. It can also damage a merchant's reputation with payment processors. If too many fraudulent transactions occur, the merchant may be placed in a high-risk category or lose the ability to accept cards.

How can merchants detect credit card testing?

What should consumers do if their card is tested?

Consumers should review statements regularly and report unauthorized charges immediately. They can also set up transaction alerts and freeze their card if they suspect fraud. Reporting to the FTC and the card issuer helps track and stop the activity.

Frequently asked questions

Is credit card testing illegal?

Yes. Credit card testing is illegal in the United States and many other countries. It falls under fraud and identity theft laws, and can lead to severe penalties.

Can card testing be prevented?

Merchants can reduce card testing with layered security, including velocity checks, CAPTCHA, and address verification. No single method is perfect, but multiple defenses make it harder for fraudsters.

What is a CVV and why does it matter?

A CVV is a three- or four-digit security code on a credit card. It is not stored by merchants, so requiring it helps confirm the physical card is present. Fraudsters who only have the card number often cannot provide the correct CVV.
