A card expiry test app is a sandbox or local tool that checks whether a payment form correctly validates the MM/YY expiration field, using only synthetic test card numbers issued by a payment processor. It verifies formatting, rejects past dates, and catches edge cases such as the final day of an expiration month. It never handles live card data.
Expiry validation covers four separate behaviors, and each one fails in a different way.

Stripe's test cards include decline, insufficient funds, and expired-card variants, so you can confirm that your form surfaces the right error message for each response code. Change the expiry on a test PAN to a past month to simulate an expired card, and to the current month to check the boundary rule.
PCI DSS requires that cardholder data be protected in every environment, including development and QA. Running a live card number through a test app breaks card network rules and voids your merchant agreement.
When the card belongs to someone else, the conduct can also fall under federal access device fraud statutes. Test apps exist to keep real account numbers out of your logs entirely.
