A BIN test checks whether the first six to eight digits of a payment card number, the Bank Identification Number, match a valid issuer range. Payment processors and merchants run BIN tests to route transactions, identify the card brand and type, and screen checkout data before an authorization request is sent. A BIN test never confirms that a card is open, funded, or used by its rightful owner.

How Does a BIN Test Work?

ISO/IEC 7812 defines the anatomy of a card number. The leading digit marks the major industry identifier, the next digits identify the issuer, and the final digit is a Luhn checksum.

A BIN test parses those digits and compares them against an issuer range database that processors refresh constantly. The result typically returns card brand, credit or debit or prepaid status, issuing bank, and issuing country.

Where Are BIN Tests Used Legitimately?

Acquirers, gateways, and fraud teams use BIN data across the payment lifecycle. Common uses include transaction routing, interchange calculation, prepaid card detection, and chargeback analysis.

Checkout systems also run a BIN check to validate the card number format before submitting an authorization. This step reduces failed transactions and flags malformed entries early.

What a BIN Test Cannot Tell You

A BIN test says nothing about the account behind the number. It cannot confirm available credit, account status, billing address, or the identity of the person entering the digits.

Only an authorization request sent through the card network to the issuer can return an approval, decline, or referral. The CVV and CVC values are verified separately at the gateway and are never part of a BIN lookup.

Is Running a BIN Test on Someone Else's Card Illegal?

Testing card numbers you do not own or have written authorization to use is access device fraud. In the United States, 18 U.S.C. Section 1029 covers trafficking in and use of unauthorized access devices, and buying or selling stolen card data is prosecuted as identity theft.

Merchants, issuers, acquirers, and processors are the parties authorized to run BIN checks. Card data obtained from a shop, forum, or dump site is stolen property, and running a BIN test against it is a federal offense.

How Should Merchants Handle BIN Data?

PCI DSS limits storage of sensitive authentication data, including the full primary account number and CVV. Tokenization replaces the PAN with a surrogate value so BIN data stays inside the processor environment.

Fraud teams pair BIN screening with address verification, CVV checks, and 3-D Secure to build a layered defense. A BIN match alone is weak evidence, so treat it as one signal among many.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a BIN test prove a card is live?

No. Only an issuer authorization response confirms that a card can be charged.

How many digits does a BIN contain?

Traditional BINs use six digits, while extended ranges use eight. The exact length depends on the card brand and issuer.
