Short answer

An Adyen test card is a card number that Adyen publishes for its test environment. It works only with a test API key or a test client key. It moves no money. It fails in live mode.

What the numbers are

Adyen lists test numbers for Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, Diners Club, JCB, and UnionPay. The numbers pass the Luhn checksum, so a payment form accepts them. Two examples that appear in many vendor documents are 4111 1111 1111 1111 for Visa and 5555 4444 3333 1111 for Mastercard. Check the Adyen test card page for the current list. Adyen adds and retires numbers over time.

How to use a test card

  1. Get a test API key or a test client key from the Adyen Customer Area.
  2. Send requests to the test endpoint, not the live endpoint.
  3. Pass the number with any expiry date in the future and a CVC.
  4. Read the resultCode in the response.

The resultCode reports what happened. Values include Authorised, Refused, Error, Pending, RedirectShopper, ChallengeShopper, and IdentifyShopper. Adyen maps some test values to fixed outcomes, so you can exercise a decline path without changing code.

3D Secure test cards

Adyen keeps a second set of test cards for 3D Secure. These trigger a frictionless flow, a challenge flow, or a refusal. The card number and the CVC select the branch. The mapping sits in the Adyen 3D Secure test documentation.

What test cards do not do

Test numbers are public data. Adyen and other processors publish them in open documentation. A card number offered for sale is not a test card. A test card has no resale value, and using one outside a sandbox account you control is not testing.

Testing without a card number

Some flows need a stored payment method. Adyen test cards cover that case. For local payment methods such as iDEAL, Klarna, or Bancontact, Adyen provides separate test data per method. Card numbers do not work for those methods.
